Mustard comes in different forms the world over. A delicious thick sauce with a sharp, sweet, and spicy flavour, it rounds off the right dishes with oomph and bite. The wholegrain variety is perfect for both cooking with as well as for using as a condiment to accompany dishes.
Use traditionally; splat over comforting slabs of toad in the hole, or slather over bread to add punch to ham sandwiches. Stir sharp spoonfuls in to thick and creamy pots of stroganoff to enhance the flavour of the rich meatballs. For a roast dinner, why not heat chopped red onion in oil, add stock, wholegrain mustard, garlic, and red wine to create a truly tasty gravy. For a hearty comforting dish, stir in a teaspoon of wholegrain mustard in to your macaroni cheese for a rounded and truly savory flavour. To accompany smoked haddock, crush potatoes with butter and a teaspoon of mustard, serve with oozing poached eggs for a quick supper with a feeling of luxury.
A favourite way to use mustard which really shows off its qualities as an ingredient is to use it in a simple sauce to drizzle over pan-fried salmon. In a small bowl mix one tablespoon of honey with a teaspoon of olive oil, half a teaspoon of wholegrain mustard and the juice of half a lemon. Mix well and pour over the salmon. This dish is delicious simply served with roasted peppers, broccoli and couscous.
